The University Hospital of Basel is one of Switzerland’s leading university hospitals. Together with the University of Basel and other partners, it drives research and innovation and shapes the medicine of tomorrow. Approximately 8,000 employees from 84 countries care for more than one million people annually in the catchment area of northwestern Switzerland. The focus is on the highest quality of care and the patient experience.
To further develop its internal control system (ICS) and meet the increasing demands of a growing organization, the University Hospital Basel sought a solution that would make existing processes more professional, transparent, and binding.
Growing with the demands
The financial ICS had previously been managed in Excel. However, as the organization evolved, so did the demands on structure, traceability, and control.
Control confirmations needed to be automated, documentation had to be audit-proof, and audits needed to be supported efficiently. At the same time, the solution needed to scale with organizational developments and be able to align with established risk management methods.
More than just a tool for the Internal Control System
The choice fell on the ICS module from Schleupen GRC. The decisive factors were, above all, its ease of use, high flexibility for customization, and the clear and structured workflow within the application.
Issues such as reporting, scalability, multi-client capability, and configurability also played a central role in the selection process. Added to this was the option to expand the solution with additional modules in the future and thus develop it over the long term.

With the introduction of Schleupen GRC, the internal control system has become significantly more robust. Automated control confirmations ensure better monitoring and enhance the traceability of controls and audits.
At the same time, information is now available much more promptly. Instead of an annual confirmation, feedback is provided several times a year. This creates greater transparency, improves the quality of compliance audits, and enables more meaningful reporting.
In this way, Schleupen GRC supports the University Hospital of Basel in sustainably developing its internal control system and preparing it for future requirements.
